I got a Momitsu DVD player from Hivizone in Hong Kong at Xander's suggestion -- here's a prelinary report:

I ran it via DVI in 480P and it looks very nice. I'd say just about as good as a computer signal. Component mode progressive scan looks about the same as any other DVD player (fuzzy)...

One question I have -- I tried to run it in some of the other modes to see what it would look like (e.g. 720P, etc) -- but none of them worked -- my projector didn't pick up any signal (it just said "no reg"). Anyone know why? I can think of a couple of possibilities:

1) The projector isn't compatible with those modes
2) The DVD player doesn't output any signal for a regular DVD in those modes
3) The cable I have is not compatible with those modes?

Anyone know the actual answer???

In any case - the 480P DVI mode is great and I recommend it for anyone who has a projector - it's MUCH better than component video....

Steve, does the player and your projector have S-Video?

If they both have it, then this gives a magical improvement over composite video.

Er, peter - I said "Component" not "Composite".

As my friends in the UK would say - composite video looks "dire". S-Video is almost as bad. Component video is a bit better, but still looks blurry. DVI, on the other hand, is a world of difference ......

Hi Steve,

Your Sharp PG-M20X definitely supports 720P and 1080I (I'm sure I tested them with a progressive scan DVD player at one time). According to the doc I'm looking at, it looks like they are only supported in "Stretch" mode (page 47 of your Owner's Guide).

I'm glad to hear the DVI connection provides a sharper image than component, I'm very interested in seeing it! I may pigtail my connection to allow a stand-alone DVD player like yours with a DVI connection, or my existing computer connection - that way I don't need to fire up the computer and deal with wireless keyboards and such when I just want to watch a DVD. :)

PS: I mentioned here in another thread that I was having a problem with picture/sound synch from time to time. The problem is in the ATI Rage Home Theater Dolby 5.1 optical sound somewhere (haven't had time to research it, but I did identify it!). I reset the sound on the DVD player to Dolby 5.1 via two channel mix-down and didn't have a single sound synch problem during last night's show (I also ran a DVD for a couple of hours while working on my mask system and kept checking it for synch and it was fine).
