Hi there. I"m new here.
I'm not sure how much of a collection I'd ever start, but It'd be nice to have a film copy of Lord of the rings. Is it possible to ever find actual Negative form a film?? How big are films generally, and how do you store them? I was thinking It's be neat to display it somehow, are there any recommendations??

Anyway. Can anyone offer me some tips on other places to look for buying 35 mm prints?? Thanks.
p.s how do you know how much you should spend on a film?

KH.

Ah ... I remember having such questions when I first started out and finally found a film forum to learn about the hobby. First: be prepared to have a lot of space if you plan to own a lot of prints. A typical movie is 2 hours long, so it's nominally a 6 reel movie (2000 feet for 20 minutes, approx.). That print on reels fills a box 15" x 15" by, oh, 18 inches. And it weighs approx. 50 pounds. You can figure $25 to $40 just for the shipping cost.

Second: this forum is a great place to look DAILY for prints offered for sale. If it's a bargain or much sought after movie, it will get snagged up quickly. Check the older postings and you'll see many offered (and still available). Another good site is www.35mmforum.com. These two sites complement each other. The print place for film is the monthly magazine THE BIG REEL. It's mostly 16mm and now video, but you'll see 35mm sprinkled throughout.

How much to pay? Well, if it's a common print or unwanted movie, figure $50 to $100 to $150. A blockbuster that just left the big screen? Anywhere from $400 to $1000. Titanic fits there, more like closer to $1000 now. For that price, figure a print that's in near excellent condition. LOTR2? Oh, $400 to $750, depending on condition. Which studio distributed it makes a big difference, too. Some, like Disney, are great at keeping the number of prints that slip to the collectors very low. Others are less vigilent.

Negatives? Like what they printed the films from? Extremely rare. And if you had it, you'd have to sell your soul to get it printed. No ligit print house will touch it, and if they did, figure $4000 to $5000 to get it printed. Yeah, the used prices are a bargain.

That's all I can type for now. Welcome to the wonderful world of 35mm!

Thank you for responding! Especially all that info!
I guess I could start saving :) I actually assumed a few thousand for any LOTR. But for starters, I wouldnt mind getting my hands of a few of the trailers. Heh. And I could look at them everyday to remind myself what I'm saving for!

Thanks again!

Yeah I bought a few trailers of LOTR off ebay. The cost was high but it's worth it.
