Many posts go completely off topic and others take it from there but sometimes interesting information or comments are made. Should they
be rated as 'off topic' even if the new subject is interesting.

Many subjects are based on a perpsective of cinema and cannot be
rated as right or wrong, on topic or off topic, accurate or inaccurate.
It depends on how you see things.

Dave, if the post could be graded independant of the user, that's another matter, but that's not how this software feature appears to function regardless of how you word it. It still is designed to give the points to the user, not the message.

I personally think you should turn it off.

How do you define 'wrong information'? Factually wrong or wrong from your persepctive.

Is digital cinema better than film? Is film better than digital? An argument
can be made either way depending on a number of factors. If you're watching a DLP projector with a 4 color wheel at 2 x speed and see distortion,
you'll hate digital cinema. Others won't have any problem watching it depending on their eyesight. Same applies to 3-D.

I could not have stated the case better myself, Richard.

See, I knew this would happen! It is like walking on eggshells here now. Everyone is either paranoid of what they are posting/thinking and a few are in a negative uproar!
I come here to learn and de-stress.
The stress is mighty high on here now.
Peter, I totally agree with you on the thread of Katrina getting out of hand.
I am now obsessed in seeing how many points I am getting!

Linda, destress, as I do, and don't give a damn about what some of the others think.

You just have to be yourself, otherwhise you will never be happy in life or love.

OK, OK, so while this 'feature' is ON, can we at least figure out how it works.

I started off at 10 points. I now have 37 (?) points. I guess have to thank 4 anonymous people for that, and YOU know who you are :), But, 37? I was watching over the weekend, and it went up as 10, 10, 2, and 5. What determines the number of points given to a message? Is it based on the person giving them, what their 'reputation' is, how many messages they've left, etc?

Dave, I'm talking about the little green dot on the right, under the number of posts we've made. That showed up after you activated this system. Not the big green 'online' indicator on the left.

That is very wise advice, Peter and I thank you. Some people want me to be who they think I should be, which is never going to happen.

Can we all agree this is already a universally unpopular feature? I don't think I've read one post that thinks this is a great idea. Who would want to invite judgment upon themselves? If I want gold stars or black demerits I'll go back to elementary school. There are other less scrutinizing film forums out there.

I could do that and get a whole lot of points :D OR
Dave Harris will kick my butt off of here!!

Is Mitchell testing us to see if any will click the negative?:p

No Jeff, I am just trying to spread some Peace, Love, and Happiness in this cold cruel thread...

Peace, Love, and Happiness

That's Mitchell's new mantra - I've heard him say it in person! :)

(I think I'll report my own post as a negative.)

And it worked. I am smiling and you got a positive vote!:)

How do you define 'wrong information'?

This is wrong information "All 16mm projectors can run 8mm film."

OK, OK, so while this 'feature' is ON, can we at least figure out how it works.

More later on how a member has point power.

Many posts go completely off topic and others take it from there but sometimes interesting information or comments are made. Should they
be rated as 'off topic' even if the new subject is interesting.

We usually encourage members to stay on topic. We hope all posts are interesting. Universally all forums consider off point posts as "not good" and suggest that members start a new thread instead of going off topic. Personally I could care less, but many members do.

There are other less scrutinizing film forums out there.

Really? Which one; the one run by the Texas fascist or the east coast dictator?

I could do that and get a whole lot of points OR
Dave Harris will kick my butt off of here!!

Never would kick you out... that would be a "good" post and you'd get points for it.

Once again I remind all that this is a trial. Let's keep it a fair one, keep an open mind and we'll see how it goes.

Dave can you PLEASE remove this useless feature that noone really considers a needed improvement. It is already creating unpleasantness amongst several forum users. Not being of much use and being a largely unpopular thing should be enough for you to remove it no? I have been a long time forum user and this "thing", whatever it is, discourages me from posting.

Here is how I see it. If I post something that even only one person finds useful, then I have met my objective - which is to make a contribution to this site. I think this is what needs to be kept in mind.

If I post something out of line, or of some value I would expect and appreciate a follow-up comment accordingly.

We all have opinions, facts, information to share - that seems to be what a forum is all about. None of the definitions I have seen here are objective - what is a "good post" to one person can be the opposite to another. You may have heard the phrase " Engaging in the lively art of conversation" - Irv Kupcinet use that on his TV show. That's what this is - art - not science. Everyones' opinion has some value.

I frankly am not concerned about "point power" or whatever, I will keep posting whenever I think I have something of value to add to the conversation.

I don't have any interest in the ratings system, and plan to simply ignore it. I don't plan to click on the little scales symbol because it doesn't matter to me what rating I have.

As far as I can see, the system will have no effect on me whatever. If I understand Dave correctly, the only people who can see my rating are me and Dave. If I never look at the rating, for me, it's as though it doesn't exist. No one else can see my rating, so it can't impact anyone else.

I'd be happy to see this feature disabled, but since I don't plan to use it, whether it's there or not will make no difference to me at all.

I suggest that those who care about how others rate their posts should take the feedback with a very large grain of salt. Those who don't can just ignore the ratings thing entirely.

Well alrighty then. I am a bit calmer now. Thanks, Dave!:D
Maybe I should dance for you all to take away the stress on this thread!
I can seek out Andy Nixon. He can play the music he created for "Soft Money". Andy, where are thou?

I can't wait to find out what that green dot means! The suspense is killing me!
