Yes, please drop this feature, Dave.
I feel like this is some trick or treat adventure on here!

Here's how well this feature is working when you do try to use it. I just went to give somebody some points, and got this pop up window instead:

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Xxxxxx Xxxxx again."

Funny thing is, I haven't given "Xxxxx Xxxxxx" any reputation points yet!

Jeff:

I bet you have. You just ran into one of the many built in protections designed to thwart mischief makers from abusing the system.

I don't believe I had given User X any rating before. I can only see messages of mine rated by "others", I can't see the ones I rated.

Incidentally, I had a message someone rated as negative. There was a red box next to it as shown in the "User CP". It has dissapeared from the list. Why?

The list in the "User CP" shows only the 5 most recent. If members want it to have more, then say so as I can expand it.

I would like this to be expanded please.:)

Also, I am spreading repuatation around and I wish to vote once again for one member but, I am still unable to. Dave, how much spreading around do we have to do before voting for the same poster again??

Based on Linda's request, the number of the most recent reputation hits as shown in the "User CP" will now be 10.

I hesitate answering your other question as I don't want to supply information which might make it easy for a trouble maker to thwart the system.

Thanks Dave, you ROCK! :)

I sure don't want any trouble maker on here, believe me, I know!
There was a mentally sick hacker on a horror forum I am on. He hacked into my friends account on the forum as well as on personal computer. He deleted all his files (he is in the midst of publishing a comic book) including his poems and art work that posted on that forum.
I was the only member on line, in the wee hours of the morning so, I communicated with him while I waited for the adminstrator to get my email and kick him off. He wrote some nasty stuff to me and about my friend, as well as posting disgusting pics (like people being hung)!
The administrator thanked me for my braveness and help.
My friend luckily found all his deleted files, in his recylce bin, a few days later.
Anyway, thought I would share my experience in how someone can cause havoc on a forum.

Sorry if I overstepped in asking the question.

Linda: No overstepping at all.

Everyone else.. please listen up:

This Weds. October 12th at approx. 6:00PM CDT the Reputation feature will be modified to include a "member reputation LEVEL" indicator, the so-called green light. Unless a member opts out, a small green or red square will appear in the header of that member's posts. When other members hover their mouse cursor over the colored square, the author's current reputation LEVEL will be shown. LEVEL's are phrases such as "is a jewel in the rough". To see the various levels look in the FAQs or my earlier post in this thread. This mod doesn't change display of a member's reputation SCORE and COMMENTS made by others. Those items are not public and only viewable by the member.

HERE IS HOW TO OPT OUT OF THIS FEATURE.

Enter the "User CP", click "Edit Options" in the left side column, then make sure that the "Show My Reputation Level" box is unchecked. If you want others to see your reputation level then make sure the box is checked.

Iv'e been away for a while and was just catching up on some recent topics. This one on reputation scoring really caught me off guard. True, it may indeed be harmless, but I think it is counter-productive to the very nature of a truly open forum.

We all make our own judgements on the validity of any post. we may think the author an idiot or a genius. If we don't find a thread interesting, we move away. If we find innacurate information, we can post a correction. Someone usually steers an off-topic back on, though sometimes the off-topic direction can be pretty interesting (should be moved onto a new thread of course).

This rating system seems to be a bit subjective, since people are more often called to action when they do not like something, than when they do. Also, not being a one person, one vote system lends much more weight to some whose opinion is not necessarily more credible than others.

I am certainly open minded about what others opinions are on this topic, but I think it will have a dampening effect on the free exchange of ideas here.

Rest assured that I will try to get the lowest score possible. I think that when you hit the lowest score a big middle finger should show up when you pass your cursor over the square.

You are a regular comedian, Jim!:p
I assume when you pass the cursor over the square of a high score poster, a thumbs up appears??:p

Hell, getting on a plane is BAD enough I have to deal with this here?!
truth is, if it goes into use.... or is it already..? am I being paranoid? .... I probably won't continue to visit the site. Which is a shame as I look forward to it everynight while I eat dinner....

Again, I can't help but ask what all the "Hype" is about like I have before. John, this has been in effect for awhile now and there seems to be no trouble or abuses reported yet. I've kept cool about this and my "reputation" shows that:cool:

I dislike the feature and don't see any value to it myself, but I also don't see what all the hype is about. The bottom line is if you don't like it don't use it. The way it is implemented (at least right now) it doesn't look like anybody else can see your "reputation", so even if someone gives you "negative votes" what difference does it make?

I'm just ignoring the whole thing. If nobody uses it, what difference does it make? Furthermore, if you go into your "User CP" options you can disable the thing anyhow - just hover over my "reputation dot" and you'll see that I've disabled it for my account.

Maybe this isn't so bad, because "I'm on a distinguished road".

How come some members have two squares???

Peter Goed
10-13-2005, 04:50 AM
Probably because they are real 'squares' Linda!!

Linda Haluska

Maybe these members are super special - maybe they are rated like a good flick!!
Seriously, what is with the two squares??

Dave Harris

A member gets a second square when their point level goes over 100.
