I am looking to rent or buy a pair of (or perhaps even a single) 16mm projectors with 2000' reel capacity that can run at silent speed for some shows in January. They would optimally have xenon lamps, but I realize that is unlikely, if you have any, or any leads please contact me asap. Thanks!

I would think running a film at a slow speed with a high intensity lamp behind it would possibly damage the film due to heat buildup.

This may be why most of the 16mm high intensity MARC and Xenon machines only run on sound speed.

Evan,
I have used modified 300w Xenon Eiki projectors with no detrimental effects to the film at all. Most of the modified projectors are fitted with a three-blade shutter to keep down the flicker and reduce the heat a bit. Running the film through at 18fps worked just fine.

Xenon silent speed projectors exist -- ELMO had one.

I actually had such a machine at one point, and I belive I still have the shutter assembly for it. If I can find it, I'd be happy to sell it to you if you want to modify a projector.

All you need to do is swap the assembly, and change the belts to different pullys, and volia, a silent speed Xenon.

I did this in reverse to switch that particular machine back to being a sound speed machine...

Nope. They exist. No problems at all...

Xenon lamps generate more light, not more heat (in fact, they generate LESS heat than incandescent or halogen lamps). It's simply a more efficient light source, don't confuse "more light" with "more heat". :)

I think there is some confusion here. Watts is a measure of power/energy. Thus 300watts means (for a light source) is mainly heat. The efficiency of the lamp/light source is important. The more efficiency, the more light per watt of energy. Since efficiency is still relatively low for the arc/incandescence type light sources - most of the energy still is dissipated in heat.

Urrr, yeah - like I said - Xenon lights generate more light, not more heat. :)

You're absolutely right of course Dave. Ultimately the amount of heat a lamp generates will be determined by the number of watts and efficiency of the lamp.

Most Eiki pedestal Xenon projectors are quite capable of running at 16fps just by taking the back off the projector head and changing the belt position on the pulleys.

I have used a 2000 watt Elmo at 15fps with out a problem. The dichroic mirror helps with the heat.
