I've noticed lately that the off-topic section of the forum has gotten totally out of control. To me off topic means items that might be of interest to members of this forum, but does not mean wildly unrelated to anything to do with film/movie collecting.

Off Topic posts to me might be about ebay problems, or about current movies or TV, or virus/scam email warnings, or about other hobbies that might be of interest to film collectors (e.g. records/phonograhs, clocks, etc) - there's quite a wide range of latitude -- But when we start having posts about the weather, or people's sock color, or what time it is in Toledo, we start losing interesting posts in the noise.

(Disclaimer: I'm speaking for myself and not for Dave or the forum).

Hi Steve,

Yes, I completely agree. And I also speak for myself only.

I somewhat agree. While I personally like the thread about Michael's sock color, I do think that there are WAY too many insipid threads that are just begging for a smartass reply.

While it may be a fun diversion to post an unexpected reply, it does get ridiculous when one looks at the many frivolous topics.

But, it's a hard call to decide what thread topic is worth posting or not posting...most people generally know the difference. Ya roll the dice and sometimes ya win, but other times... well you all know that answer.

I have to agree Steven. It resembles a chat room. Why I have put little in this forum.

OK, perhaps the recent spate of posts are a little off of center, and maybe there were too many of them at once, but come on guys, have a sense of humor. :p

I'm sure it was all innocent, and not meant to offend/anger/annoy anybody.

No, I don't agree... I don't think anything has gotten out of control. I think that some people may have hurt feelings over some of the comments being written, but the comments are honest opinions, possibly intolerant but I don't think written in mean spirit. Please remember that posts very often read far differently then what the writer intended. A writer's humor or criticism can easily be read as a hurtfull insult, when none was intended. I'm sure that no one wants to hurt anyone's feelings on this board. So if Linda or anyone else feels they have been singled out and insulted, they should toughen up a bit and understand that no one is insulting or name calling but everyone has a right to their opinion and may express it.

"The cutting room floor" forum was created for off topic discussion. It is the place for discussion of topics related or unrelated with anything to do with our common interest in motion pictures, and film / DVD collecting. What our members chose to discuss here is entirely within their control and discretion. If you want to discuss Einstein's theory of relativity, the Iraq war, a good recipe for chocolate chip cookies, Howard Stern, the directorial achievements of Orson Wells, and/or the color of Mike Coffin's socks... or anyother damn thing you want to...then feel free to do so. Obviously your administrators have differing personal opinions on this, but the board philosophy since my Dad created this place has always been anti-censorship and it will continue to be so. No one is being forced to read anything posted here. If a member is not to your liking then use the "ignor list" in your User CP. If 5 or 6 people are getting their jollies off by talking about local weather or anything else that's causing you to get out of joint, then I suggest you click on another link. You can certainly write a responsive post and tell us all how you feel, but as Jeff suggests I urge everyone to expand your tolerance, sense of humor and respect for all our members to discuss whatever they care to in this forum.

The only reason I get a bit annoyed by OT posts is that when I click on "show new posts" I get all excited in the mistaken belief that there's a TON of posts regarding my favourite hobby, only to quickly realise that it's mostly unrelated. It's getting a bit junk-mailish for me. Is there any way users can choose to ignore the Cutting Room Floor forum?

If a member is not to your liking then use the "ignor list" in your User CP.

"Ignore" does no good, all it does is substitute text like "This user is ignored" in the middle of a thread - so if the entire thread (perhaps started by someone you are ignoring) is wasteful, ignoring ONE person doesn't do any good.

Stuart asks above if there is a way to ignore the entire Cutting Room Floor forum. I hate to have to do THAT just because SOME members are IMO SPAMming that forum. Important but "off topic" information will probably be posted there, but I'm not going to wade through 100 "Jello or Pudding?" posts looking for them, and IMHO I shouldn't have to.

However, there being no other alternatives, I'll repeat Stuart's question - Is there away to unsubscribe to The Cutting Room Floor forum so that when I click "New Posts" I don't have to be bombarded with CRF posts intermingled with the "real ones" (i.e. those that are on topic!)?

The point is well taken that this is an off-topic forum, and that therefore anything should be allowed--anything, that is, except for personal slurs and attacks. Post whatever you like here, but when someone starts getting personal about things such as people's last names (as happened in a January 11th post), that's when an administrator should step in with a bit of admonishment.

Tolerance has nothing to do with it -- the issue here is basically Spam... There ARE off-topic postings that would be of interest to a film/movie collector , while there are other posts that are just noise . When the noise level gets too high - then the usuful posts are lost.

This is Dave's forum, so if he's happy with an "anything goes, no matter how inane" policy, that's fine - but if this section of the forum continues in that direction, many people will just stop reading it - even if there are some posts that they might find useful (e.g. virus alerts, ebay problems, movie and movie star news, etc).

There are many forums and chat rooms out there for general chat.

I'll look into it but I doubt it.
