I was shocked to hear this but certainly not surprised. At least he died doing what he loved.:o

Yes, very sad indeed and I said the same thing to myself as Thomas did, at least he loved what he was doing when he died!

Sad indeed, but, lets face it, he was never gonna die by just falling under a train.........

Not surprised at all. It was going to be this way. You keep putting yourself in harms way, eventually it's gonna get you.

When I lived in La Jolla, California in the 1980's and '90's I scuba dove on a daily basis. I averaged two 90's per day for about 5 years. During that time I had tried without sucess to hitch a ride with the Manta Rays little/smaller cousin without sucess. So I asked the owner of the second largest fish wholesaler on LA at the time what I was doing wrong, and how to catch the ride as I knew he had grown up in La Jolla. He calmly informed me that my life had been sparred as he had one friend and knowledge of two other deaths by a chest cavity sting by one of these dosile critters. Needless to say I stopped trying to hitch a ride. Steve certainly made a fatile mistake, but not one anyone but a seasoned/experienced diver knowledgeable with these types rays would know about. The Manta is hige and harmless, but his smaller cousin, although also nearly the size of a VW, is NOT! Goodbye Steve, well miss seeing your animal adventures!

Didn't the barb go through his heart or soemthing? That would have been a horrible death.

Id dont know, bleeding to death would be merciful compared to the pain and paralisys of the venon. In any case I hope it was quick. Will miss his enthusiasm (sp?) and great smile.

Living only 25 miles from Australia Zoo, we will indeed miss the guy, but he died doing what he loves and knowing the risks he was incurring.
At the present time he is taking up 50% of the local night news and 7 minutes on the national evening news - he was loved world-wide and will be greatly missed by many millions.
Peter.
