Maybe we need to organize and start our own auction website just for films and equipment.

Dave Harris, owner of this site, ran a film auction site for several years. It was much cheaper than eBay, and no hassles, but nobody used it.

For some reason Dave's auction site didn't work out and there were never a lot of cheaper movies listed. I propose an auction site run by collectors, for collectors. Charge enough of a service fee to advertise, attack ebay and pay for the site. We could monitor the sellers for rip off artist and that could be a selling point. Now would be the time to act while everyone still feels the sting of the increased prices. I felt like punching the screen when I looked at that smiling jack ass when I was reading his letter.

If there only was a viable alternative to ebay it would be great,.
The problem with Dave's auction site is that few people posted films, and even fewer people bought films. His pricing was great - he only charged if the print sold. I tried listing quite a lot of films, but didn't sell many - and as a seller, it's demotivating to take the time to list stuff and not have it sell.
There is another site (which I can't mention here) that has fixed price sales for film for free.

Any Body try Yahoo Actions? Seems like I have good luck with them.
or Even Bidville If more collectors know about this, the more they will use them. And not E Bay.And for Dave he really did try. To make things work. With this sites actions.

The trouble is there is virtually no 16mm market on any of these auction sites other than eBay. While an organized movement to deal with eachother on non-eBay sites would work (as would another filmauction type of site), the fact is film prints coming out of estates are going to appear on eBay, period.

.Ah You must be a E Bay Nut. As you state (virtually no 16mm market on any of these auction sites). So let’s Start! I list on both and have GREAT Luck on them. If MORE people Would List. WE all Would benefit That way more People would know about these 2 sites and say HELL with E Bay. I started on Bidville years Ago and they, at my request gave me a 16mm & 8mm HEADING

Rich,
I totally agree but it's not going to be viable for every collector. Take my case in point. Alot of what I collect is going to come on the market out of estates; old households. Either the collectors here or in other circles I know of don't have what I need or won't part with it.That's why part of me will have to keep searching eBay till kingdom come.

Greetings Tom
Your right, E bay is for some. Like yourself. Just out in space. (At times i use Ebay myself) At least there is an alternative. To E bay prices. Do you add there extra charges to the bidding amount?( for the buyers) To make up the loss of your item You sell it for $10.00 add eBay listing cost now your down to $9.50 then when you sell it another cost for selling Your down to $9.00 Then the labor cost on your part (time Spent)
Now you’re down to $ 8.00. Then you have to take pay pal fees now you’re down to $7.50. then the Mailing cost which the buyer Pays But the time it takes to get it ready to ship and the cost of package material And taking it to the shipper.
Think about it
EBay is like a Hobby:D
Well Now Whats your Profit?

Richard --
From a seller's standpoint, the problem with listing on other sites is that there are fewer people looking at the items, and this translates into fewer sales and at lower prices (if it's an auction).
I would love to find somewhere else to sell stuff -- but it's not worth the time and effort to post lots of items if no one is going to buy them.

Greetings Steve
Seeing that this is getting alot of attn now on this form the more people who know about this the the more people will look at the other auction sites but we do need more listings so the good folks will keep comeing back and checking and buying. Whats to lose. In trying.

Regarding "other sites" - which other auction sites, besides ebay, deal with 16mm?
Would appreciate some pointers.
Thanks,
Mike.

Hello everyone!I too am fed up with EBay!Is there a solution?Well there could be! An advert on Google or Yahoo pointing to a movies for sale site.Advertising 35mm,16mm,8mm prints for sale.or swap or whatever.Or an advert on Google or Yahoo showing movies for sale on this forum.Maybe we could advertise this forum on EBay!There are some very intelligent people on this forum, surely we could work something out.As for the cost of advertising we could all pay something towards it.If you read this Steven Sigel you could be the treasurer!!!.Its just a suggestion of course. It just needs someone with a bit of gumption to get it started. You guys in the States think you are being charged a lot for your fees, the fees on the UK site are even worse.Plus when we buy movies from you we have to pay VAT(Valued Added Tax)at 17.5% to the government, deep joy.Come on somebody think of something instead of winging about it,after all we do speak the same language.Im sure it could work.Any suggestions.Regards to all Tom.

Hi Thomas,
I would love to have another place to sell prints -- and I do from time to time put up stuff on this forum and on the other one. The problem is that as much as I hate dealing with ebay, they have a much larger audience, and I sell a lot more stuff there.
I've been toying with trying to start a mailing list to all of my past customers, but I need to find the time to collect all the information together and start sending lists.
